Basile was founded in 1898 and incorporated in 1925. Basile's Cajun heritage continues with many residents speaking both French and English.

In the village of Richard, is the Charlene Marie Richard gravesite. Miss Richard, expected to be canonized, is already known as the "Little Saint of Southwest Louisiana."
